Panjiang Refined uses Guntert & Zimmerman S850 and S600 pavers to pave six lanes of I-40/I-55, three in each direction

Strategy Unfortunately, the large amount of rehabilitation work during the 140-day contract did not leave much room for the paving phase. This problem was compounded by the weather. The company received a new G& Z S600 slipform multi-purpose paver purchased for the I-40/I-55 project. The crew uses the S600 to pave a variety of sidewalk widths, including 4.6-meter and 4.3-meter wide main lanes and curbs, as well as 1.2-meter and 3-meter wide offset pavements. The machine's versatility with standard adjustable pave widths from 2.4 m to 6.7 m without adding sections to the frame is important because the contractor has to change widths regularly on this project. The road crew uses the S600 to lay 4.3m and 4.6m wide lanes, curbs and temporary ramps. Because of the segmented design of the job, there are a number of small areas where the paver must fill in narrower embankments. In these cases, the crew places sensors on the edge of the pallet, sets a set width of 3 m, moves the set cantilevered away from the paver, and fills areas with 1.2 m and 2.4 m offsets adjacent to previously poured paths and curbs

ANALYSIS
When operating roads, their surfaces are exposed to the impact of moving vehicles, various climatic factors, etc., which causes deformation, destruction and deterioration of the surface. Failures of the road surface, leading to a decrease in the operational qualities of the road, are eliminated by repair work. There are current, medium and major repairs of roads. Routine repairs are carried out mainly in the warm season, when the air temperature is not below +5C. However, if the faults that have occurred can cause more damage, the road is repaired regardless of the air temperature. Medium repairs are carried out in accordance with the established repair intervals, i.e. once every few years, in order to strengthen the road surface by restoring the layer of wear and tear. Medium repairs are characterized by significant volumes and can cover up to 40% of the entire pavement area. Overhaul is carried out periodically in the established inter-repair periods in order to fully restore or improve the durability of the pavement, or if necessary to change the geometric parameters of the road surface. A distinctive feature of overhaul - the scope of work covers the entire width of the road on a large section. During the current repair of asphalt concrete surface the cracks, potholes, sags, waves and patches on the road surface are eliminated, as well as damages of curbstone. v-shaped cracks repair is one of the most common problems of asphalt concrete surface. Opened cracks contribute to the accelerated destruction of the road surface, so their timely elimination provides preservation of asphalt concrete in proper operating condition. At the repair of cracks are filled with sealing materials. This operation is preceded by thorough cleaning of cracks (with metal hooks and compressed air) from dirt and dust to ensure proper adhesion of the filling material to the asphalt concrete. If the width of the cracks is less than 5 mm, then thin bitumen or a special rubber-bitumen mastic is used to fill them, if more than 5 mm - thin bitumen or binding mastics. After the cracks are filled with liquefied bitumen, they are covered with mineral materials. If the pavement has a grid of small cracks, it is recommended not to fill them individually, but to repair the entire pavement. Cracks are filled in dry weather, at a temperature of at least 5C with a special machine. It is best to work in the spring or fall. Potholes and subsidence drastically reduce the operational quality of the pavement. When repairing damage to road surfaces first perform preparatory work, potholes and dips thoroughly cleaned from contamination and mark their contours with straight lines perpendicular and parallel to the axis of the road. If the potholes are located at a short distance from each other, they are combined into one general map. The distance from the pothole to the border of the area to be repaired should be within 3-5 cm. Then cut out the repaired part along the outlined contour to the depth of the damage, but not less than 3-4 cm. When repairing two or multi-layer pavement, when the adhesion of the top layer is unsatisfactory, cut it to a depth. Do the same with the second and subsequent layers, if the damage extends to them as well. The walls of the cut contour should be strictly plumb. Then the place to be repaired is thoroughly cleaned from the cut asphalt concrete and dirt, and the inner surfaces are lubricated with liquid or viscous (liquefied) bitumen. Hot asphalt concrete mixture with a temperature of 150-180 C is laid on the place prepared in this way. Depending on the depth of the cut, the mixture is laid in one (to a depth of less than 5 cm) or two layers and should be slightly higher than the road surface, bearing in mind that the hot mix is compacted with a compaction factor of 1.25-1.35. On maps up to 3-5 m2 the mixture is compacted using hand tools, pneumatic or electric tampers. Motor rollers are used when repairing maps of a large area. The joints of newly paved and old asphalt concrete are carefully smoothed so that the surface of the pavement is even, without overlaps and open joints.
